Hi All
Had the appointment which didnt go very well.
The technique they wanted to do with Ben has evidently worked very well for children with anxiety problems - but they had not tried it on anyone with Tourettes.
It was listening to a CD which is a persons voice and tensing different muscles at the same time. I was out of the room and she said Ben managed about 20 mins where he relaxed and followed it really well. Then he just opened his eyes and said he had had enough.
When I went back into the room he was very distracted, couldnt sit still and kept saying he wanted to go home.
She is sending me a copy of the CD and another one to try but I wonder if it will work. If he is not tuned in to it then it probably wont.
Also he said it started to stress him out and he started to feel really twitchy. As we left he had some tics coming down the stairs and he was quite agitated.
I also wonder if too many appointments are a problem. With all the stresses over the last few weeks of school and talking to teachers, St Georges, psychologists, I feel perhaps he needs a break from all the talking about it - it seems to have completely overtaken our life over the last 4/5 months.
What do you think has anyone ever had this too - appointment overload maybe???

Hi Theresa - Yes and unfortunately I have an overload occuring in Sept, Oct as more assessments are due re the Tribunal. To try and make it a calmer experiance I am staying over and doing a B & B with Sam to make it abit more fun with me. Ben managed well then for 20 mins that is a long time to expect a child to sit for as long and he probably had some more tics coming home due to him having to concentrate that length of time!!
It does have a tendancy to start taking over your life and it does mean that it is always the first topic of conversation and it then starts to dominate the family. Often Sam will say I don't want to talk about it anymore and that is when he stays of school as his brain seems to not cope and he has to just switch off from thinking.

Hi Lynn
I know what you mean, Ben definately gets fed up with talking about it all, especially as the more you talk about tics the worse they seem to become.
I am longing for the summer holidays and then we can forget it all including school

Hi Lynn
I have to say I dont want the boys to go back to school because we have really been enjoying the hols.
Also because Ben has been really settled and has had hardly no tics at all.
I am getting nervous about school starting, although he seems to be quite looking forward to it. I am nervous about Christmas this year because I think it could be the year they find out you know what, and I know they will be distraught as all kids are.
How do you feel, what is the status with Sam and his new school?
How will Grace feel about going back to school and is she still being problematic about clothes and such like?

Our solicitor has started her attack so to speak!!!! We will have a conclusion before the end of the year thank goodness!!!! Grace is alright about going back to school but she is still low on her confidence of her clothes and confidence. She had a friend around yesterday who is very fashionable and confident and once they had played together for the afternoon Grace came downstairs dressed in a lovely top and skirt!!!!!
An older sister is required really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lyn
Do you ever get a chance to go shopping with Grace by herself?

Yes I do when Sam goes to his special needs place and that all goes well when she is choosing the clothes but as soon as she has got home and put them all away, that is where they find themselves forever more shut away in her wardrobe!!!!
Hopefully she will find herself when she goes back to school and grows up in the next 6 months.

Hi All
We had a couple of psychology appointments in the school holidays which went ok, and then another today.
Today triggered off a horrendous tic attack on the way home and as a result he has not been to school today.
He keeps saying he feels different to everyone else and says its not because of his problems but because he feels he needs to do something "good". He is also obsessed with creating his own website which we are getting him to design in an "ideas" book.
The psychologist did a good exercise with him which pointed out that all though everyone may seem the same on the surface they generally have different likes and dislikes so everyone is "different".
By the end of all this physco babble he was feeling really sick and thought he was going to be ill in the car, which was when the tics kicked off.
He does though understand the importance of going and is happy to go. Makes you wonder what is for the best really.

Oh dear - not so good then!! The ideas book is a good one though as the y do go through a lot of obsessional ideas that go as quick as they came! I might do that with Sam.
He had a better week - more settled. The school is starting a warhammer club???? Is anyone aware of what this is and is it expensive!!!!
Denise - how did St Georges go????
Have a good weekend.

Hi
I have never heard of warhammer - sounds interesting
A friend of mine also suggested an index box with cards for the ideas that he can organise. I thought this seemed a good idea too.
Very glad Sam had a more settled week. Its bad enough when they are home with you but being away must be very stressful for you wondering how he is.
I thought Ben may be very unsettled last night following his ticcy day but he was fine. When we collected Joe from school he ran into his class to get some stuff and he wasnt phased which is good. Always so nervous that the tics are going to get related to school again which is a real nightmare as you know.
Its a beautiful day - hope everyone is getting the chance to enjoy it. Im off to sit in the garden - ignoring the house and the garden work that needs to be done!! Boys are out playing lightsabres so long may it last.
Bye for now
